Gavin: 5 Months

I can hardly believe that the teeny little newborn who I brought home from the hospital is already five months old! How can that be? He is the sweetest little man you've ever met. Quiet, serious, loving, and cuddly are just a few words that describe Baby. At this age, they develop so quickly, it's hard to keep up! We definitely have a thumb sucker on our hands! He loves his thumb at bedtime, nap time, and all times in between! Gavin is the expert roller, and can roll over several times in a row. That once thick, dark mohawk has turned into a very thin old man comb over. Gavin is curious about everything and especially loves his toys. Gavin's favorite thing is his daddy's voice. It's even worth a pause at mealtime to look around and find daddy. Gavin also adores his big brother. Blane gets the most smiles and laughs! Gavin is now sleeping from 7:30-5:30 and sometimes as late as 6:30! He then goes right back to bed until about 8 or so. He is still napping three times a day which is great! He's a great napper and he prefers his bed over the stroller or car seat, which is making on-the-go mothering more of a challenge! As serious as this little guy is, he is just as wild in the bath tub. From the moment he gets in the bath he is splashing and kicking up a storm! We could have the next Michael Phelps on our hands! Gavin is getting so sturdy and strong! He can practically sit up on his own when I'm holding him in my lap. Gavin is also loving his baby food. He likes rice cereal, oatmeal and banana, and homemade carrots. He eats baby food twice a day - at lunch with Blane and I, and at dinnertime with the whole family! My two favorite things about Gavin are the way that he cuddles with me before bedtime, and the way that his right ear flaps over just a little, like a sweet puppy.

Today we visited with our pediatrician to have Gavin's head re-evaluated. Four months of sleeping on his back has created a very flat head. It seems to have improved slightly this past month since he's been sleeping on his tummy, but there was still enough flatness to move forward with some options for improvement. What we did learn from today's appointment is that Gavin has congenital torticollis. This basically means that the left neck muscle is shorter than the right and is causing him to favor looking to one side, and sleeping on that side. So, we will be starting physical therapy through Cooks Children's soon. More updates on that as we know more. Also, we have been referred to a Crainiologist to look at the flattening of his head referred to as brachycephaly. Our appointment is November 6th and we will update then!

Our family couldn't be doing better and we are so thankful for our health and the many blessings that our loving Father has bestowed on us.
